Swedan is Classical Ayurvedic Preparatory procedure to be done before Panchkarma (Five Detoxification Procedure) which involves inducing sweat in patients. Swedan is usually accompanied with Snehan Purv karm (Preparatory procedure). It can be either Sarvang Swedan (Whole body) or Sthanik Swedan(Local)depending upon need of patient.

Swedan Purva Karma divided in 4 major category as following:

1) TAAP SWED – Taap swed means TO provide direct heat or Hot Fomentation by means of any material like Cloth or cotton

2) UPANAAH SWED  – Upanah swed means tying something in form of cloth bolus. (Pottali). In this material used is less solid/ Hard (Na ati ghan= Upanaha)or semi solid material.

3)USHM SWED (NADI SWED) – Ushma means Vapour. Sudation given by means of Vapour is known as Ushma swed.

4) DRAVA SWED – Drav means liquid. Processed milk Or Water or Decoction are used to provide sudation.

Swedan is beneficial in Respiratory sickness as well like Cough, Cold or Asthama. Herbal steam inhalation or on Chest helps to reduce inflammation.

What is Panchakarma?
